Grit and resilience significantly enhance physical activity (PA) engagement and performance. Higher levels of these personality traits are linked to better adherence and outcomes, suggesting potential for health interventions.
Area of Science:
- Behavioral Science
- Psychology
- Sports Science
Background:
- Many Americans do not meet physical activity (PA) guidelines.
- Personality traits like grit and resilience may help overcome barriers to PA.
- Understanding this relationship is crucial for public health.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review literature on the relationship between grit, resilience, and PA outcomes.
- To synthesize findings on how personality traits influence PA participation and performance.
Main Methods:
- Adhered to PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews.
- Included peer-reviewed studies with healthy adults examining PA and grit/resilience.
- Evaluated study quality using AXIS and performed qualitative synthesis.
Main Results:
- Included 33 studies with 37,370 participants.
- Average study quality was rated as good.
- Most studies showed positive associations between grit, resilience, and PA outcomes (adherence, intensity, performance).
Conclusions:
- Grit and resilience are significant factors in supporting PA engagement.
- Individuals with higher grit and resilience are more likely to be regularly active and perform better.
- Findings suggest potential for interventions to foster these traits for improved PA adherence and health.
