Insights
In children, medical technology dependence and comorbidities increased the risk of death from COVID-19. This outcome was rare, affecting 0.7% of pediatric COVID-19 hospital admissions.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric critical care medicine
- Infectious diseases epidemiology
Background:
- COVID-19 mortality factors in pediatric populations remain incompletely understood.
- Characterizing risk factors is crucial for improving outcomes in children with COVID-19.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify factors associated with mortality in children diagnosed with COVID-19.
- To compare characteristics between children who died from COVID-19 and those who survived.
Main Methods:
- A Canadian-Caribbean case-control study was conducted.
- 26 pediatric COVID-19 deaths were matched with 78 pediatric COVID-19 survivors from hospital admissions.
Main Results:
- Medical technology dependence was significantly associated with increased COVID-19 mortality in children.
- Multiple comorbidities were also identified as risk factors for fatal COVID-19 outcomes in pediatric cases.
- The overall mortality rate for pediatric COVID-19 admissions in this cohort was 0.7%.
Conclusions:
- Specific factors like medical technology dependence and comorbidities are linked to higher COVID-19 mortality risk in children.
- While rare, understanding these risk factors can inform clinical management and preventive strategies for pediatric COVID-19 cases.
Abstract:
Factors associated with COVID-19 mortality are not well characterized in children. This Canadian-Caribbean case-control study identified 26 children who died of COVID-19 and matched them to 78 children hospitalized with COVID-19 who survived. Medical technology dependence and several comorbidities were associated with death, an outcome which occurred in 0.7% of COVID-19 admissions.
