Background:

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an irreversible lung condition impacting daily life for patients and their families.
Effective support systems are crucial for managing the challenges faced by individuals with COPD and their next of kin.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify and evaluate the support provided to individuals with COPD and their next of kin.
To assess the adequacy of current support from healthcare and society.
To inform future person-centered care strategies.

Main Methods:

A systematic integrative review was conducted.
Searches were performed across major databases (PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science) from 2014-2023.
Constant comparison method was used for analysis.

Main Results:

Patients with COPD receive practical and emotional support from next of kin and informational/training support from healthcare.
Next of kin provide significant support but desire more information, knowledge, and understanding.
Current support for next of kin is minimal.

Conclusions:

There is a critical lack of support for the next of kin of individuals with COPD.
Future healthcare interventions must adopt a person-centered approach, involving both patients and their next of kin.
Enhanced support tailored to individual needs is essential for improving quality of life.
