The magnetic properties of the DyF3powder with a particle size 7µm were studied. The magnetic entropy change is 25.5 Jkg-1K-1(193 mJcm-3K-1) at 5 K for a magnetic field change of 7 T based on magnetization measurements. Lattice heat capacity based on density functional theory and magnetic heat capacity based on exchange charges model calculations were performed which are in good agreement with experiment. The maximum adiabatic temperature changes of 24 K at 5 K demonstrate DyF3as effective magnetic cooling material at liquid hydrogen and liquid helium temperatures.
