Bonanno's Theory of Grieving01:17

Bonanno's Theory of Grieving

162
Grieving is a complex psychological and emotional process that varies significantly among individuals. George Bonanno's research on bereavement identified four distinct patterns of grieving, offering a nuanced understanding of how people cope with significant loss, such as the death of a spouse, over extended periods. These patterns — resilience, recovery, chronic dysfunction, and delayed grief — highlight the diversity in emotional responses and adaptive mechanisms.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy01:25

Interpersonal Psychotherapy

99
Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a structured, time-limited therapeutic approach initially developed to treat depression. It integrates key concepts from psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral therapies, making it a uniquely eclectic framework. The therapy is rooted in the interpersonal theories of Adolph Meyer and Harry Stack Sullivan, as well as John Bowlby's attachment theory, and focuses on the interplay between interpersonal relationships and emotional well-being.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Psychology
  • Grief Counseling

Background:

  • Bereavement outreach in oncology varies significantly across institutions and providers.
  • Little research has focused on the impact and beneficial aspects of bereavement support groups for family members.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To gather participant feedback on a structured cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based bereavement support group curriculum.
  • To assess the effectiveness and participant satisfaction with a virtual bereavement support group for recently bereaved spouses and partners at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI).

Main Methods:

  • A quality improvement framework was used to evaluate an 18-session, 6-week CBT-based bereavement support group.
  • Participants were bereaved spouses and partners who attended virtual groups between April 2020 and December 2022.
  • An evaluation was completed by 86 out of 138 participants.

Main Results:

  • The program was highly evaluated, with participants reporting reduced feelings of isolation (4.26/5) and finding session topics relevant (4.40/5).
  • A significant majority (81.40%) liked the virtual format.
  • Over half (56.47%) preferred a hybrid delivery model for future support groups.

Conclusions:

  • The CBT-based bereavement support group curriculum received high marks from participants.
  • A hybrid delivery model was favored for future bereavement support groups, indicating a need for flexible and accessible grief support options.
