Background:
Ireland's Olympian and Paralympian athletes are elite performers who possess skill, grit, and unrelenting drive. Parallels to the high performance required in healthcare can be drawn. Increasing recognition of human factors across the healthcare service in a pan-speciality interprofessional approach can improve patient outcomes.
Methods:
We propose an analysis of Ireland's Olympian and Paralympian success in the context of sports psychology and human factors. Using DuPont's framework, we provide pragmatic, real-world examples in an easy-to-adapt fashion applicable to healthcare.
Results:
The dirty dozen of human factors can be applied equally to the domains of sport and healthcare. Using clear examples of recent Irish sporting successes at the Olympics, a framework for how to conceptualise and apply the human factors which govern patient outcomes and organisational success can be achieved. These include lack of communication, complacency, lack of knowledge, distraction, lack of teamwork, fatigue, lack of resources, pressure, lack of assertiveness, stress, and lack of awareness.
Conclusion:
Novice healthcare professionals may use this introduction to become familiar with the area of human factors in an easy-to-conceptualise manner.

Cognitive Learning
E. C. Tolman's theory of purposive behavior emphasizes that much behavior is goal-directed. He argued that to understand behavior, we must look at the entire sequence of actions leading to a goal. For instance, high school students study hard, not just due to past reinforcement but also to achieve the goal of getting into a good college.
Tolman introduced the idea that behavior is influenced by...
Exercise and Muscle Performance
Endurance exercises
Endurance exercises involve running, swimming, or cycling, which require repetitive movements with low force output. When a person engages in endurance exercise, a few noticeable changes occur in their skeletal muscles. For instance, the number of capillaries...

Steps in the Modeling Process
Attention is the first necessary component for observational learning. It involves focusing on what the model is doing and saying. For example, if you decide to take a drawing class to enhance your skills, you need to pay close attention to the instructor's words and hand movements. The characteristics of the model significantly...
