Targeting circadian rhythm in kidney disease: challenges and prospects

Abstract:
Circadian clock controls the 24-h physiological activities of mammals, including sleep, metabolism and immune function. The normal physiological activities of the kidney require precise regulation, such as glomerular filtration rate, water and electrolyte excretion, and blood pressure control, which are controlled by the internal clock. In recent years, more and more studies have shown that the influence of circadian rhythm on renal function has been underestimated, and the occurrence and development of many kidney diseases may even be mostly related to circadian rhythm disorders. Understanding the natural circadian rhythm of kidney and its influencing factors is helpful to guide the clinical diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases. This review aids in unveiling novel, potential molecular targets for kidney disease based on circadian rhythms.
