Abstract:
Prescribing antibiotics in a time of increasing resistance requires the prescriber to understand the mechanisms of how pathogens develop resistance, pathogens that are of the highest concern to impact health outcomes, and guidelines for first-line treatment for infections. It is important to know antimicrobial resistance patterns and utilize a local antibiogram when prescribing to treat an infection empirically. Case study examples of using national guidelines and local antibiograms to provide optimal care are discussed.
