Relationship between ovarian reserve and disease activity in women with multiple sclerosis

Abstract:
We aimed to explore whether Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels are associated with disease activity in multiple sclerosis (MS) women. AMH levels were similar between 73 patients and 146 controls. Analyses adjusted for age showed higher AMH levels in patients who relapsed within the last 12 months (yes: 4.9 ± 5.3 vs. no: 1.7 ± 1.6, p = 0.008), and increased with the number of relapses that occurred in the previous 24 months (0: 1.9 ± 1.8, 1: 2.3 ± 2.9, ⩾2: 5.8 ± 6.2 ng/mL, p = 0.02). In conclusion, higher AMH levels-reflecting reproductive system reserve-were associated with a relapse-prone MS pattern characteristic of younger age, independently of chronological age.
