    Background:

    • Accommodation is the eye's ability to adjust focus for different distances.
    • Pupil size is known to influence visual performance and accommodation.
    • Understanding accommodation mechanisms is vital for correcting refractive errors.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of pupil size on the monocular accommodation response.
    • To analyze the relationship between accommodation response and stimulus across varying pupil diameters.
    • To explore the optical and diffractive factors influencing accommodation control.

    Main Methods:

    • Monocular accommodation response/stimulus curves were measured using Snellen targets.
    • Stimulus range: +1.0 to -5.0 Diopters (D).
    • Artificial pupils: 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 mm diameters.
    • Constant retinal illuminance: 600 trolands (td).

    Main Results:

    • Accommodation response diminished significantly with smaller pupil diameters.
    • The slopes of response/stimulus curves were consistent with geometrical optics.
    • Retinal blur circle diameter was linearly related to the stimulus and independent of pupil size.

    Conclusions:

    • Geometrical optics adequately describes the primary mechanism of accommodation response.
    • Diffractive effects, particularly contrast changes at ~5 cycles/degree, may significantly influence accommodation.
    • Pupil size is a critical factor affecting the accuracy of the accommodative system.
