    Summary

Psychiatric morbidity after thyroid surgery was assessed. No significant clinical or biochemical differences were found between patients who had undergone total or partial thyroidectomy, or between cases and non-cases.

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Psychiatry
    • Surgical Outcomes

    Background:

    • Thyroidectomy is a common surgical procedure.
    • Post-thyroidectomy psychiatric morbidity is a potential concern.
    • Long-term effects of different thyroidectomy types on mental health require investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate psychiatric morbidity in patients approximately 7 years after thyroid surgery.
    • To compare psychiatric and biochemical profiles between total and partial thyroidectomy patients.
    • To identify differences between psychiatric cases and non-cases post-thyroidectomy.

    Main Methods:

    • Screening of 30 subjects for psychiatric morbidity using the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ).
    • Classification of subjects into 'cases' (GHQ positive) and 'non-cases'.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Comparison of plasma calcium and inorganic phosphate levels between total and partial thyroidectomy groups, and between cases and non-cases.
  • Main Results:

    • Thirteen subjects were identified as psychiatric 'cases'.
    • Total thyroidectomy 'cases' showed a trend towards lower plasma calcium and higher inorganic phosphate compared to partial thyroidectomy 'cases', but this was not statistically significant.
    • No significant clinical or biochemical differences were observed between psychiatric cases and non-cases, regardless of the surgical procedure.

    Conclusions:

    • Thyroidectomy type (total vs. partial) did not appear to significantly influence long-term psychiatric morbidity or biochemical status.
    • No clear clinical or biochemical distinctions were found between patients experiencing psychiatric morbidity and those who were not, years after thyroid surgery.
