J H Charnov, W Q Sturner

The American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology
    |December 1, 1985

    Summary

This study of 92 suicides found differences between tranquilizer and antidepressant drug use. Tranquilizer suicides were more often traumatic and combined with other substances, while antidepressant users had more psychiatric history and planning.

    Area of Science:

    • Forensic Toxicology
    • Psychopharmacology
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • Medication use in suicide cases requires detailed examination.
    • Understanding drug-specific suicide patterns is crucial for prevention.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze suicide cases involving tranquilizers versus antidepressant drugs.
    • To identify distinct characteristics and patterns associated with each drug class in suicides.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 92 suicide investigations.
    • Inclusion criteria: presence of tranquilizers or antidepressants in deceased.
    • Data collected from the Rhode Island Medical Examiner's Office (1975-1982).

    Main Results:

    • Tranquilizer-associated suicides were more frequently traumatic and involved co-ingestion with alcohol/other drugs.
    • Antidepressant users were more likely to have prior psychiatric hospitalization and suicide attempts.
    • Tranquilizers were prescribed by a wider range of physicians compared to antidepressants.

    Conclusions:

    • Distinct patterns exist between tranquilizer and antidepressant-related suicides.
    • Antidepressant-related suicides may involve more premeditation.
    • Findings highlight the importance of considering drug type in suicide risk assessment and intervention.
