First Robotic Inguinal Hernia Repair Using the Saroa Surgical System With Force Feedback

Abstract:
Robotic surgery for inguinal hernias is commonly opted for due to proven safety and efficacy. The Saroa Surgical System, developed by RIVERFIELD from Tokyo Medical and Dental University and Tokyo Institute of Technology, is a three-armed robot featuring force feedback. Here, we report the first inguinal hernia repair using the Saroa Surgical System in an 83-year-old man diagnosed with a left inguinal hernia (European Hernia Society Classification L2). After thorough preoperative simulation, the operation was completed successfully. Operative time was 127 min, console time 108 min, with no intraoperative blood loss. The patient was discharged on postoperative day one without complications. This case demonstrates the Saroa system's safety and feasibility for inguinal hernia repair, highlighting the benefits of grasping force feedback for delicate tissue handling and potentially reducing intraoperative organ damage.
