A mindfulness program for intensive care unit (ICU) nurses significantly reduced adverse events and improved sleep quality. This intervention effectively supports nurses experiencing second victim (SV) effects, enhancing their psychological well-being.
Area of Science:
- Nursing
- Psychology
- Healthcare Management
Background:
- Intensive care units (ICUs) present high-stress environments, increasing the risk of nurses becoming second victims (SVs).
- Limited research exists on mindfulness interventions for ICU nurses experiencing SV effects, lacking tailored protocols for their specific work scenarios.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and assess the efficacy of a mindfulness-based support program for ICU nurses.
- To mitigate the psychological distress and improve the well-being of ICU nurses acting as second victims.
Main Methods:
- A retrospective case-control study compared ICU nurses receiving a mindfulness program (experimental group, n=50) with those receiving routine psychological support (control group, n=54).
- Intervention effectiveness was measured by comparing adverse event incidence, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores, and Second Victim Experience and Support Tool (SVEST) scores.
Main Results:
- The experimental group showed a 34% decrease in adverse events.
- Nurses in the mindfulness program demonstrated significantly improved sleep quality (PSQI scores decreased from 12.94 to 9.32) compared to the control group (12.76 to 10.72).
- The experimental group had significantly lower SVEST scores (76.18) than the control group (91.52), indicating reduced second victim distress.
Conclusions:
- A mindfulness-based support program is effective in reducing psychological distress for ICU nurses who are second victims.
- The intervention significantly improves sleep quality and enhances overall support for affected nurses.
- This program offers a tailored, effective strategy for supporting ICU nurses in high-stress environments.
