Abstract:
This review focuses on the exciting potential of advanced supramolecular systems that integrate cyclodextrins (CDs) with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS). Macrocyclic CDs provide functional segments for host-guest interactions whereas the rigid 3D inorganic components enhance mechanical properties and thermal stability of the resulting materials. A new class of hybrid systems suitable for innovative smart applications has emerged by incorporation of these complementary properties, expanding the use of POSS and CDs in materials science. For example, flexible electronic devices, biocompatible stimuli responsive cross-linked networks, strain sensors and porous materials for advanced separation techniques have been created by using these compounds as molecular building blocks independently or as integrated macromolecular systems. Understanding the mechanisms behind their molecular packing in the solid state and the formation of hierarchical superstructures is crucial for effective tailoring the properties of those hybrid materials.
