Focusing of Light in the Eye01:16

Focusing of Light in the Eye

Light rays enter the eye through the cornea, a transparent dome-shaped tissue that is the eye's outermost layer. The cornea bends or refracts, light rays traveling to the pupil. The shape of the cornea determines how much of the light is bent and whether the image will be focused correctly on the retina at the back of the eye. Once the light has passed through both refraction layers, it converges into a single focal point onto a small area. This is where photoreceptors start transforming...

    Area of Science:

    • Optics
    • Materials Science
    • Optical Engineering

    Background:

    • Traditional double-layer diffractive optical elements (DLDOEs) suffer from low diffraction efficiency and high angular sensitivity in broadband and wide-angle applications.
    • Optimizing DLDOEs requires balancing substrate material selection with microstructure height for optimal performance.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop a dual-objective optimization method to enhance the performance of DLDOEs.
    • To address the limitations of conventional DLDOEs in broadband and wide-angle scenarios.

    Main Methods:

    • Developed a mean-standard deviation dual-objective diffraction efficiency evaluation model (MSDODE).
    • Incorporated material library matching constraints based on dispersion characteristics.
    • Achieved coordinated optimization of DLDOE substrate material and microstructure height.

    Main Results:

    • Attained an average diffraction efficiency of 0.9614 across 0.4–1.0μm wavelengths and 0–30° incident angles.
    • Demonstrated minimal decrease (0.08%) in diffraction efficiency at 30° compared to 0°.
    • Achieved excellent chromatic aberration correction in an annular-aperture lens (AFL) system with MTF > 0.36 at 166lp/mm.

    Conclusions:

    • The proposed dual-objective optimization method significantly enhances DLDOE performance.
    • The optimized DLDOEs show superior broadband and wide-angle capabilities with minimal efficiency loss.
    • The design offers a viable solution for advanced optical systems requiring high performance across wide spectral and angular ranges.
