Parentral Nutrition: Centeral and Peripheral Parental Nutrition01:27

Parentral Nutrition: Centeral and Peripheral Parental Nutrition

314
Parenteral Nutrition (PN) delivers essential nutrients directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system. It is commonly used for individuals with severe digestive disorders or conditions that prevent normal nutrient absorption.
PN can be administered through two primary routes:
1. Central Parenteral Nutrition (CPN):
CPN involves delivering a high concentration of nutrients through a large vein. This is typically achieved using a Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) or,...

Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

95
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.
Foundations of Community Mental Health Programs
Central to the success of community-based interventions is the...

Regulation of Food Intake01:30

Regulation of Food Intake

472
Short-term regulation of food intake primarily involves neural signals from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, blood nutrient levels, and GI tract hormones. Communication between the gut and brain via vagal nerve fibers plays a significant role in evaluating the contents of the gut. Clinical studies have shown that protein ingestion produces a more prolonged response in these nerve fibers compared to an equivalent amount of glucose. Additionally, the activation of stretch receptors caused by GI...

Environmental Influences on Intelligence01:29

Environmental Influences on Intelligence

420
Despite the strong genetic influence on traits like intelligence, environmental factors significantly shape outcomes. For example, while over 90% of height variation is due to genetic differences, environmental factors such as nutrition also have a notable impact. Similarly, for intelligence, changes in a child's surroundings can significantly alter their IQ. Research shows that enriched environments boost children's academic success and help them develop key cognitive skills. Children...

Dietary Connections01:23

Dietary Connections

55.7K
In biological systems, most metabolic pathways are interconnected. The cellular respiration processes that convert glucose to ATP—such as glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation, and the citric acid cycle—tie into those that break down other organic compounds. As a result, various foods—from apples to cheese to guacamole—end up as ATP. In addition to carbohydrates, food also contains proteins and lipids—such as cholesterol and fats. All of these organic compounds are used...

Factors Affecting Workability01:24

Factors Affecting Workability

120
The workability of concrete is a critical characteristic that influences the ease of mixing, handling, and finishing the concrete. It is affected by several factors including water content, aggregate properties, and admixtures like air entrainment. Water plays a fundamental role as it lubricates the concrete mix, facilitating easier movement and placement. However, the water requirement varies depending on the texture and shape of aggregates. Finer particles and angular, rough-textured...

Summary

The Eating Smart, Being Active curriculum improved some areas, but only half of Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) participants reported better food security. Food resource management and safety were key factors.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health Nutrition
  • Community Health Education
  • Food Security Research

Background:

  • The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) aims to improve dietary behaviors and health outcomes.
  • Understanding the impact of EFNEP's 'Eating Smart, Being Active' curriculum on food security is crucial for program optimization.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effect of the EFNEP 'Eating Smart, Being Active' curriculum on participant food security.
  • To identify specific program components that influence changes in food security.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized cross-sectional, quantitative secondary data from 200 adult EFNEP participants.
  • Employed paired t tests for pre-post program comparisons and structural equation modeling for path analysis.
  • Measured food security, food resource management, and food safety as key outcomes.

Main Results:

  • All EFNEP domains showed significant improvements, yet only 51.5% of participants reported enhanced food security.
  • Improvements in food resource management (β = 0.33) and food safety (β = 0.28) significantly predicted increased food security (P < 0.001).

Conclusions:

  • While EFNEP effectively improves nutrition and safety behaviors, its direct impact on food security is partial.
  • Future program iterations should incorporate targeted food security strategies to maximize participant benefits.
