Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the interdisciplinary endocarditis team management of IE in a tertiary care hospital.
  • To evaluate treatment strategies and outcomes for IE patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 812 patients admitted for IE between January 2012 and December 2021.
  • Risk stratification using EuroSCORE II and EndoSCORE.
  • Analysis of treatment modalities (conservative vs. surgical) and adherence to Duke criteria.

Main Results:

  • Surgical intervention was performed in 69.3% of patients, while 30.7% received conservative treatment.
  • Patients not meeting Duke criteria were more frequently treated conservatively.
  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)-related endocarditis and tricuspid valve endocarditis cases often received conservative management, unlike aortic valve endocarditis.

Conclusions:

  • Infective endocarditis necessitates a specialized, interdisciplinary team for optimal management.
  • Treatment decisions for IE should be individualized within an endocarditis team setting.
  • Consideration of the causative pathogen and disease extent is vital for effective IE treatment.
