    Mycotoxin intoxication was suspected in a large flock of hens due to decreased egg production and illness. Despite clinical signs, laboratory tests on feed samples did not confirm the mycotoxin diagnosis.

    Background:

    • A large commercial flock of 15,000 Leghorn-type hens exhibited a significant decline in egg production.
    • Affected birds presented with enlarged, blue combs and diarrhea, indicative of systemic distress.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the cause of decreased egg production and clinical signs in a commercial hen flock.
    • To determine if mycotoxin intoxication was the underlying etiology.

    Main Methods:

    • Clinical examination of affected hens.
    • Postmortem and histopathological evaluation of tissues.
    • Analysis of feed samples for the presence of mycotoxins.

    Main Results:

    • Clinical signs, necropsy findings, and histopathology were consistent with mycotoxin intoxication.
    • However, all submitted feed samples tested negative for known mycotoxins.

    Conclusions:

    • While clinical evidence suggested mycotoxin intoxication, the negative feed analysis prevented definitive diagnosis.
    • Further investigation may be warranted to identify potential etiological agents or unassayed mycotoxins.
