Cholecystokinin cholecystography: a three year prospective trial
Clinical Radiology
|September 1, 1985
Summary
Cholecystokinin cholecystography cannot predict long-term outcomes for patients undergoing cholecystectomy. This diagnostic test offers no benefit in determining if surgery will relieve biliary pain.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Diagnostic Imaging
Background:
- Investigated the utility of cholecystokinin (CCK) cholecystography in predicting outcomes of cholecystectomy for biliary pain.
- Focused on patients with suspected biliary pain but negative standard oral cholecystography.
Observation:
- A prospective study followed 48 patients (primarily female) for over 3 years post-investigation.
- Half of the patients underwent cholecystectomy; outcomes were similar between surgical and conservative treatment groups.
Findings:
- Cholecystokinin cholecystography failed to predict patient response to cholecystectomy regarding pain relief.
- No significant difference in long-term outcomes was observed between patients treated surgically versus conservatively.
Implications:
- CCK cholecystography is not a valuable tool for deciding on cholecystectomy for persistent biliary pain.
- The study questions the diagnostic value of CCK cholecystography in this patient population.

Endoscopic Procedures III: Video Capsule Endoscopy
Capsule endoscopy, or wireless or video capsule endoscopy, is a diagnostic procedure for examining the entire gastrointestinal tract. Patients swallow a capsule about the size of a vitamin tablet. The capsule is equipped with a transmitter, a battery, an LED light source, and a color video camera to capture images throughout the gastrointestinal tract. This procedure is particularly useful for diagnosing conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, tumors, polyps, ulcers, unexplained...
Endoscopic Procedures V: ERCP
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a diagnostic procedure that combines endoscopy and fluoroscopy to diagnose and treat conditions related to the bile ducts, pancreatic ducts, and gallbladder. This procedure is beneficial for identifying and addressing blockages, gallstones, strictures, and tumors within the biliary or pancreatic systems. ERCP is both diagnostic and therapeutic, offering the ability to visualize and treat identified problems in one session.

Cholecystitis
Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder, most commonly caused by obstruction of the cystic duct. This blockage prevents bile from draining, leading to gallbladder distension, inflammation, and potentially serious complications. This condition may present acutely or chronically and can happen with or without gallstones.EtiologyAbout 95% of cholecystitis cases are calculous, caused by gallstones blocking the cystic duct, leading to bile accumulation and inflammation of the gallbladder...
