Sclerosing mesenteritis (SM) is a rare condition. This case study shows rituximab may effectively treat idiopathic SM when other therapies fail or are contraindicated.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Immunology
- Rare Diseases
Background:
- Sclerosing mesenteritis (SM) is a rare idiopathic fibroinflammatory disorder affecting the bowel mesentery.
- The efficacy of rituximab in idiopathic, IgG4-unrelated SM is not well-established.
- Rituximab is a monoclonal antibody used in treating certain immune system disorders.
Observation:
- A patient with idiopathic sclerosing mesenteritis was treated with rituximab.
- The patient had not responded to or had contraindications for standard first-line therapies.
Findings:
- Successful management of idiopathic sclerosing mesenteritis was achieved with rituximab.
- This suggests rituximab can be a viable therapeutic option.
Implications:
- Rituximab may be a valuable treatment for idiopathic SM, particularly in refractory cases.
- Further research is warranted to confirm rituximab's efficacy in a broader patient population.
- This finding expands therapeutic options for patients with rare fibroinflammatory disorders.
