Relationship between eosinophil counts and carbohydrate intake in US children with asthma

Purpose:
To study the relationship between eosinophil levels and carbohydrate intake in children with asthma.
Methods:
This cross-sectional study, which was nationally representative, used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2020 cycle on children with asthma. The study investigated the relationship between eosinophil levels and carbohydrate intake using multiple linear regression models, restricted cubic spline, stratified analysis and sensitivity analysis.
Results:
A total of 1756 participants were included in this study. In fully adjusted models, log-transformed carbohydrate intake was positively associated with eosinophil counts (β = 0.24; 95% CI: 0.12 to 0.36; P < 0.001). This result remained significant even when quintiles of carbohydrate intake were included in the multiple regression model. A linear association between carbohydrate intake and eosinophil count was found by restricted cubic spline curve (P = 0.066). Stratification and sensitivity analyses further demonstrated the robustness of the association.
Conclusion:
Carbohydrate intake is positively associated with eosinophil counts in US children with asthma.
