Objectives:
Impaired fasting glucose (IFG) as a global concern can happen from childhood which can be the result of poor diet. One of the dietary factors that should be considered in IFG are short-chain carbohydrates called Fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs).
Methods:
We followed up 267 adolescents aged 10-19 years to their adulthood aged over 20 years in the frame work of Tehran Lipid and Glucose Cohort Study. Their diets were assessed using food frequency questionnaire and then using table contents of Fructose, Fructan, Galacto-oligosaccharide, Lactose, Sorbitol, and Mannitol to assess FODMAPs intake. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) was also measured by the enzymatic colorimetric method using glucose oxidase.
Results:
The mean ± SD of FPG in adolescents and adults were 4.74 ± 0.34 mmol/L and 4.87 ± 0.48 mmol/L, respectively. The mean ± SD of FODMAP intake in adolescents was 26.4 ± 24.1 g/d. Before (OR = 1.73, 95%CI = 0.68-4.41, P-value = 0.489) and after (OR = 0.81, 95%CI = 0.14-4.61, P-value = 0.531) controlling for confounding factors, there were no significant association between FODMAPs (total/type) intake in adolescence and IFG in early adulthood.
Conclusions:
In conclusion there were no association of longitudinal FODMAPs intake in adolescence with incidence of IFG in early adulthood.
