Abstract:
Zhang et al. report a 'chemical radar' system in bacteria that detects predatory amoebae. An amoeba-produced enzymatic activity modifies a bacterial signal, which is then sensed by the prey to trigger amoebicidal defence, an elegant case of interspecies signal processing.
