Citrate, a green alternative to heparin
1Nephrology Department, Army Share Fund Hospital of Athens, 417 NIMTS, Greece, Private Dialysis Unit "Polyxenia-Renal", Athens, Greece.
Abstract:
An alternative to systemic heparin anticoagulation for HD is citrate dialysate (CD) which contains a small amount of citric acid. The nephrology community demands an environmentally sustainable kidney care and among others, heparin is a threat to planetary health. Citrate is the green alternative to heparin in HD and it is most likely better for the internal enviromment since it simultaneously provokes increased hemoglobin with a fixed dose of erythropoietin and reduced iron administration.
