Background:
Problematic social media use (PSMU) is becoming increasingly common, with various studies highlighting a notable correlation with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptomatology.
Methods:
A comprehensive search strategy was employed to identify relevant studies from the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, and ProQuest. Meta-analysis was performed using Comprehensive Meta Analysis software with a random effects model.
Results:
The meta-analysis included 15 studies with a total of 35,223 participants. The analysis revealed a moderate positive correlation between ADHD symptomatology and PSMU (r = 0.361, 95 % CI [0.297, 0.421]). Subgroup analyses identified several significant moderators: data collection timing (rAfter-COVID-19>rBefore-COVID-19), assessment tools for PSMU (rBSMAS > rSMDS > rOthers), and assessment tools for ADHD (rASRS > rOthers). Additionally, the mean age of participants emerged as a significant moderator in the meta-regression analysis.
Conclusions:
The evidence supports a significant association between ADHD symptomatology and PSMU. These findings have implications for future research and clinical practice.
