Summary

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) significantly improved cognitive insight and working memory in schizophrenia patients. This adjunctive bifrontal tDCS therapy offers a promising non-invasive treatment for cognitive deficits in schizophrenia.

Background:

  • Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) plays a crucial role in cognitive functions affected in schizophrenia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of bilateral transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the DLPFC in improving cognitive deficits in schizophrenia.
  • To assess the impact of tDCS on cognitive insight and working memory in schizophrenia patients.

Main Methods:

  • A single-center, single-blind, randomized sham-controlled study involving 30 schizophrenia patients.
  • Participants received 10 sessions of either active (anodal F3, cathodal F4) or sham bilateral tDCS.
  • Cognitive function, insight, and symptom severity were assessed using scales like BCIS, N-Back, TMT, SAPS, and SANS at baseline and post-intervention.
