In Vietnam, Type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients most prefer nutrition and lifestyle counseling. Preferences for disease knowledge, lifestyle, and medication information are influenced by sociodemographic and clinical factors, guiding tailored T2D interventions.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Public Health
- Health Education
Background:
- Diabetes-related knowledge and self-management in Vietnam are suboptimal.
- Limited interventions address diverse counseling needs of Type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients.
- Targeted, cost-effective health counseling initiatives are needed.
Purpose of the Study:
- Identify preferred counseling topics for T2D patients in Vietnam.
- Examine factors influencing T2D patients' counseling preferences.
- Inform the development of tailored health counseling programs.
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional, descriptive study of 460 T2D outpatients.
- Structured interviews and medical record review.
- Multinomial logistic regression to identify influencing factors.
Main Results:
- Nutrition and lifestyle counseling was most preferred (49%), followed by disease knowledge (33%) and medication information (18%).
- Occupational status and complications influenced preference for disease knowledge.
- Marital status and complications influenced preference for nutrition/lifestyle counseling.
- Medication regimen and fasting blood glucose levels predicted preference for medication information.
Conclusions:
- Tailored health counseling programs are essential for T2D patient needs.
- Personalized approaches in nutrition, lifestyle, and medication management optimize care.
- Insights support individualized T2D care by considering factors influencing intervention choices.
