Health Information Exchange and Beyond: Cross-Standard Data Federation
1Health Informatics, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science University of Applied Sciences, Stralsund, Germany.
Objective:
Literature reports on HIE using federation, however in most instances by enforcing a specific standard or profile for information exchange.
Methods:
This paper reviews typical data classes for HIE, standards for content and metadata representation. It derives an approach for a cross-standard HIE and assesses typical operations "query and retrieve" and "store" in a federated setting Conclusion: The cross-standard HIE based on federation has been successfully implemented for more than 100 hospitals using four different standards for interfacing, namely mobile IHE profiles, HL7 V2 messages, HL7 FHIR resources and IHE profiles to comply to the varying capabilities of the hospitals attached.
