Documentation burden associated with use of the electronic health record (EHR) is a known contributor to burnout which affects both staff physicians and medical trainees alike. Current trainees are expected to function proficiently in the EHR with minimal training. The EHR training they do receive is often designed for staff physicians and not specific to their needs, leading to frustration. We hypothesized that tailored resident trainee EHR training would be beneficial and may decrease burnout. We designed, implemented, and evaluated a training model for EHR use specific to surgical trainees. Trainees were highly satisfied with the course and felt supported and prepared for clinical care.
