Validation of Temporal Definitions for Multidrug Use in Kampo Medicine

Abstract:
Kampo medicine, a traditional Japanese medicine, is distributed as a combination product in Japan, and the multiple use of ethical Kampo formulations can lead to an overdose of the constituent crude drugs and polypharmacy. Few studies have addressed this issue; monthly-based definitions may better capture prescribing patterns and support further investigations. This study validated a monthly definition of multidrug use against a daily definition, showing a high positive predictive value. A monthly definition simplifies data analysis without compromising validity, supporting future research on related adverse effects.
