Investigating Hippocampal Alterations Following Traumatic Brain Injury

Abstract:
Hippocampal atrophy in moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (msTBI) may indicate neurodegenerative progression. This study compared hippocampal parenchyma fraction (HPF) between thirty two patients with msTBI at 3 months post-injury and thirty five healthy controls (HC). T1-weighed images were used to calculate HPF using kaiba software. A t-test revealed that HPF was significantly lower in msTBI patients (p < 0.001). A general linear model, adjusted for age and gender, also showed a significant association between HPF and group differences (p < 0.001).
