Summary

Point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) for pediatric skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) improves with experience. An average of 29 ultrasounds were needed for providers to reach 90% accuracy in detecting SSTIs.

Background:

  • Point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) is increasingly used for diagnosing skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) in pediatric emergency medicine.
  • Empirical data are needed to establish skill development standards for POCUS in this setting.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of POCUS for pediatric SSTIs.
  • To determine the learning curve for POCUS proficiency in detecting SSTIs.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective analysis of 3408 POCUS studies for cellulitis and abscess in children was conducted.
  • Provider experience was assessed by the number of studies performed, with accuracy rated by experts.
  • Mixed-effects logistic regression modeled accuracy based on temporal order of studies within each provider.

  • Provider accuracy in POCUS for SSTIs significantly improved with experience (OR: 1.02 per scan).
