Ammoxidation of Methylarenes Mediated by a Photo-/Iron Relay

Abstract:
A photothermal coupling system comprising NH2OH·HCl, NH4Cl, and Fe2(SO4)3 has been developed for the direct ammoxidation of methylarenes under O2 and long-wavelength ultraviolet (UV) light (UVA) irradiation. This light-driven system is applicable to a broad spectrum of methylarenes, facilitating access to diverse aryl nitriles, which are ubiquitous in the field of fine chemicals. Mechanistic investigations suggest that the reaction is an integration of two steps: chlorine-radical-mediated photooxidation and subsequent Fe3+-promoted thermal cyanation via a five-membered cyclic Fe3+-dioxime complex.
