    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Behavioral Science

    Background:

    • Cognitive behavioral training (CBT) is a therapeutic approach.
    • Social skills are crucial for interpersonal interactions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of two cognitive behavioral training programs.
    • To assess the long-term maintenance of behavioral gains.
    • To investigate the transferability of learned skills between different behaviors.

    Main Methods:

    • 111 college undergraduates participated in either a facilitative or didactic CBT program.
    • Programs included behavior rehearsal, modeling, coaching, and cognitive restructuring.
    • Self-report and behavioral measures were used for assessment.
    • Follow-up assessments were conducted 1-2 years post-program.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Both CBT approaches yielded significant improvements in self-report and behavioral outcomes.
    • These improvements were maintained at 1-2 year follow-up.
    • Evidence of short-term bilateral transfer was observed between request and refusal behaviors.

    Conclusions:

    • Cognitive behavioral training is effective in improving social skills.
    • The gains from CBT are durable and maintained over time.
    • Skill transfer from more complex request behaviors to simpler refusal behaviors was noted, but not vice versa.
