Background:
There is an observed increase in the burden of mental disorders among the aging global population, with depression, particularly late-life depression, being a significant concern. Our objectives are to establish and evaluate mental health nursing competencies for older patients with depression and to assess the proficiency and confidence of nursing staff in providing care for this population.
Methods:
An action research approach and psychometric analysis were employed.
Results:
258 nurse practitioners with experience in geriatric care were included. Five categories: health assessment and care, mental well-being, daily activity maintenance, resource linkage, and nursing ethics and regulations. Participation in geriatric and depression care courses significantly improved proficiency. With 20 % achieving high proficiency, 70 % moderate, and 10 % low.
Conclusions:
Training in geriatric depression care is insufficient. Establishing standardized competencies, enhancing continuing education, and fostering collaboration among nursing educators and experts are essential to improving care quality and meeting patient needs.
