    Background:

    • Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is a viral disease affecting the laryngotracheal tree.
    • Current treatment involves repeated surgical removal, posing a significant burden on some patients.
    • RRP lesions carry a risk of malignant degeneration, necessitating careful therapeutic choices.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of polyriboinosinic-polyribocytidylic acid [poly(I,C)-LC] as a systemic agent for controlling RRP.
    • To assess the potential of poly(I,C)-LC to reduce the frequency of surgical interventions in RRP patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Ten courses of poly(I,C)-LC were administered to eight patients with RRP.
    • Interferon production was assessed in a subset of patients.
    • Disease progression and the need for surgical intervention were monitored.

    Main Results:

    • Three patients demonstrated the ability to produce good interferon titers.
    • Four patients showed a probable slowing of disease progression, indicated by reduced surgical requirements.
