Abstract:
This manuscript describes a visible-light-promoted, Ir-catalyzed, aerobic protocol for amide synthesis from tertiary amines and carboxylic acids. The reaction likely proceeds through α-C-H oxidation of the tertiary amine, followed by C-N bond cleavage via hydrolysis to the secondary amine intermediate. Concurrently, the additive CF3SO2Na reacts to activate the carboxylic acid via an acyl fluoride intermediate, which in turn reacts with the secondary amine to yield the product amides. The established conditions tolerate a wide variety of carboxylic acid substrates, including complex carboxylic acids. Furthermore, previously unreactive amine substrates such as N-methyl morpholine and tri-n-butyl amine are shown to react readily.

Preparation of Amides
The DCC-promoted synthesis of amides begins with the protonation of DCC by carboxylic acid. The protonation makes it a better acceptor. Next, the addition of carboxylate to the protonated carbodiimide gives a reactive acylating agent.
Subsequently, the amine acts as a nucleophile that attacks the acylating agent to form a tetrahedral intermediate. In the...

Preparation of 1° Amines: Azide Synthesis
Azide ions act as good nucleophiles and react with unhindered alkyl halides to form alkyl azides. Alkyl azides do not participate in further nucleophilic substitution reactions, thereby eliminating the chances of polyalkylated products. Alkyl azides are reduced by hydride-based reducing agents, like lithium aluminum...
