Researchers developed a diode-pumped Ytterbium, Gadolinium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Perovskite (Yb,Gd:YAP) laser. This laser generates ultrashort optical pulses, achieving 23 fs, the shortest reported for Yb3+-doped perovskite crystals.

    Area of Science:

    • Laser Physics
    • Materials Science

    Background:

    • Diode-pumped solid-state lasers are crucial for various applications.
    • Ytterbium (Yb3+)-doped materials offer advantages for generating ultrashort pulses.
    • Perovskite-type crystals are emerging as promising laser gain media.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the potential of diode-pumped Yb,Gd:YAP lasers for ultrashort pulse generation.
    • To demonstrate Kerr-lens mode-locking in this specific laser system.
    • To characterize the performance of the generated ultrashort pulses.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized a diode-pumped Yb,Gd:YAP crystal as the gain medium.
    • Employed soft-aperture Kerr-lens mode-locking (KLM) technique.
    • Characterized pulse duration, average output power, and wavelength using optical diagnostics.

    Main Results:

    • Achieved soliton pulses as short as 23 femtoseconds (fs) at 1082.3 nm.
    • Obtained an average output power of 45 mW at 67.25 MHz repetition rate for the shortest pulses.
    • Demonstrated a maximum average output power of 101 mW at 1056.5 nm with 34 fs pulse duration and 38.9 kW peak power.

    Conclusions:

    • This study presents the first Kerr-lens mode-locked operation in a diode-pumped Yb,Gd:YAP laser.
    • The achieved 23 fs pulse duration is the shortest ever reported for any Yb3+-doped perovskite-type crystal laser.
    • The results highlight the potential of Yb,Gd:YAP as a high-performance gain medium for ultrashort pulse generation.
