    Summary

    Long-term haloperidol administration in monkeys caused persistent movement disorders, including tremor and oro-facial dyskinesias, even after drug cessation. Neuropathological examination revealed no central nervous system alterations.

    Background:

    • Haloperidol is a typical antipsychotic used to treat psychosis.
    • Movement disorders are known side effects of haloperidol treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the long-term effects of chronic haloperidol administration on motor function in non-human primates.
    • To determine if haloperidol-induced movement disorders persist after drug cessation.
    • To correlate behavioral changes with neuropathological findings.

    • Six normal monkeys received daily intramuscular injections of haloperidol (0.25 mg/kg) for six months.
