  • A 3-arm randomized clinical trial was conducted with patients aged 6 months and older across 21 primary care practices.
  • Patients were randomized to receive usual care, a physician-created video, or a physician-created infographic encouraging influenza vaccination.
  • Interventions were delivered via the patient portal up to three times during the vaccination season.

Main Results:

  • Overall influenza vaccination rates by April 1, 2024, did not significantly differ between the intervention groups (video: 48.0%, infographic: 47.5%) and usual care (46.9%).
  • A post hoc analysis revealed significantly higher vaccination rates in children younger than 18 in both the video (58.4%) and infographic (55.1%) arms compared to usual care (54.5%).
  • No significant increase in vaccination rates was observed for adult age groups in the intervention arms.

Conclusions:

  • Physician-created videos and infographics, while not boosting overall influenza vaccination rates, demonstrated effectiveness in increasing immunization among children.
  • Personalized physician messaging may be a viable strategy to improve pediatric influenza vaccination rates.
  • Further research and innovative approaches are needed to enhance influenza vaccination across all age groups.
