Obstructive infantile hydrocephalus can develop from meningitis. This rare case highlights the importance of monitoring head circumference in infants with meningitis to detect hydrocephalus early.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Neurology
- Infectious Diseases
- Neurosurgery
Background:
- Obstructive infantile hydrocephalus results from cerebrospinal fluid flow obstruction.
- Aqueductal stenosis leads to specific ventricular dilation patterns.
- Obstructive hydrocephalus complicated by meningoventriculitis is exceptionally rare.
Observation:
- A 16-week-old infant presented with *Escherichia coli* meningoventriculitis.
- Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed hydrocephalus.
- Cerebrospinal fluid culture identified *Escherichia coli*.
Findings:
- The infant developed obstructive hydrocephalus secondary to *Escherichia coli* meningoventriculitis.
- Diagnosis was confirmed via neuroimaging and CSF analysis.
- Management involved serial ventricular drainage, antibiotics, and ventriculoperitoneal shunting.
Implications:
- This case underscores the challenges in managing rare pediatric meningitis complications.
- Serial head circumference measurement is crucial for early hydrocephalus detection in meningitis.
- Prompt diagnosis and intervention are vital for favorable outcomes in infantile hydrocephalus.
