Uterine artery embolization (UAE) combined with methotrexate is a safe and effective treatment for cervical pregnancy (CP). This minimally invasive approach achieved a 100% technical success rate with no complications in a recent study.
Area of Science:
- Reproductive Medicine
- Interventional Radiology
- Gynecologic Oncology
Background:
- Cervical pregnancy (CP) is a rare form of ectopic pregnancy, accounting for less than 1% of all cases.
- Optimal management strategies for CP are still being investigated, with minimally invasive options gaining traction.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy and safety of super-selective uterine artery embolization (UAE) in treating cervical pregnancy.
- To present a single center's experience with endovascular embolization for CP.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of nine patients with CP treated between 2017 and 2024.
- Endovascular uterine embolization using a mixture of methotrexate and gel sponge via selective catheterization of supplying vessels.
- Assessment of procedural and clinical outcomes, including efficacy, safety, complications, and long-term results.
Main Results:
- 100% technical success rate for UAE in all nine patients.
- No procedural complications were reported.
- Follow-up ultrasound confirmed resolution of the gestational sac's blood flow in all cases.
Conclusions:
- Uterine artery embolization is a safe and effective endovascular treatment for cervical pregnancy.
- This minimally invasive therapy should be considered a viable option in multidisciplinary treatment discussions for CP.
