Skin Cancer01:30

Skin Cancer

4.5K
Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. It is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide, and its incidence continues to rise.
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): BCC is the most common type of skin cancer, accounting for about 80% of cases. It typically develops in...

Cells of the Epidermis01:24

Cells of the Epidermis

4.4K
The epidermis is made of four or five layers of epithelial cells, depending on its location in the body. From deep to superficial, these layers are the stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, and stratum corneum.
The cells in all these layers except the stratum basale are called keratinocytes, a type of cell that manufactures and stores the protein keratin. The keratinocytes in the stratum corneum are dead and regularly slough away, being replaced by cells from...

Types of Biopharmaceutical Studies: Controlled and Non-Controlled Approaches

174
Biopharmaceutical studies constitute a vital field aiming to enhance drug delivery methods and refine therapeutic approaches, drawing upon diverse interdisciplinary knowledge. In research methodologies, the choice between controlled and non-controlled studies significantly influences the study's reliability and accuracy.
Non-controlled studies, commonly employed for initial exploration, lack a control group, rendering them susceptible to biases and external influences. In contrast,...

Cancer Survival Analysis01:21

Cancer Survival Analysis

455
Cancer survival analysis focuses on quantifying and interpreting the time from a key starting point, such as diagnosis or the initiation of treatment, to a specific endpoint, such as remission or death. This analysis provides critical insights into treatment effectiveness and factors that influence patient outcomes, helping to shape clinical decisions and guide prognostic evaluations. A cornerstone of oncology research, survival analysis tackles the challenges of skewed, non-normally...

Renewal of Skin Epidermal Stem Cells01:12

Renewal of Skin Epidermal Stem Cells

2.6K
The skin is divided into epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis, the skin's outermost, middle, and inner layers. The human epidermal layer regularly undergoes renewal, where old, dead cells are replaced by new cells. Epidermal stem cells or EpiSCs divide and differentiate to restore the lost cells. For the renewal process, some EpiSCs continuously self-renew. In contrast, few others differentiate into transit-amplifying cells, which later form prickle or spinous cells, followed by granular...

Mutagenicity and Carcinogenicity01:25

Mutagenicity and Carcinogenicity

1.4K
Mutagenicity and carcinogenicity refer to the ability of drugs to cause genetic defects and induce cancer, respectively. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies agents into four groups based on their carcinogenic potential. Group 1 agents are known human carcinogens; group 2A agents are probably carcinogenic to humans; group 3 agents lack data to support their role in carcinogenesis; and group 4 includes agents for which data support that they are not likely to be...

Summary

Public awareness of keratinocyte carcinoma (KC) is low, with many unaware of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) being the most common skin cancer. Improved health education is needed to address this knowledge gap and promote preventive behaviors.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Public Health
  • Cancer Research

Background:

  • Rising incidence of keratinocyte carcinoma (KC), especially in fair-skinned individuals.
  • Urgent need for enhanced public health education on this prevalent skin cancer.
  • This review focuses on laypeople's knowledge and risk perception of KC.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review existing research on KC knowledge and risk perception among the general population.
  • To identify gaps in public understanding and awareness of KC.
  • To inform the development of targeted health education strategies.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review registered on PROSPERO (CRD42024618851) and adhering to PRISMA guidelines.
  • Searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycArticles, and PsycINFO for studies assessing KC knowledge/risk perception in laypeople.
  • Risk of bias assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute checklist; comparable outcomes meta-analyzed.

Main Results:

  • 17 reports (1991-2024) involving 16,728 individuals were analyzed.
  • Low awareness of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) (20.75%), though colloquial terms were more recognized (60.9-72.8%).
  • Significant underestimation of KC frequency (only 7.21% identified BCC as most common skin cancer); low concern (25-30%) reported.

Conclusions:

  • Highlights a critical need for health education interventions to boost KC knowledge and preventive actions.
  • Identified limitations include high risk of bias, result heterogeneity, and lack of standardized tools.
  • Further research is crucial to deepen understanding and awareness of KC across diverse populations.
