Methodological considerations for studying exercise and training responses in youths

Abstract:
The study of exercise and training responses in children and adolescents involves methodological challenges, which are unique to this population. Such challenges include ethical considerations, differences in body dimensions, maturational effects, differences in baseline or resting characteristics, large signal variability, psychological considerations, and logistical factors. Some challenges may be addressed using alternative measurement techniques, while others can be addressed with modification of protocol design or statistical approaches. Where possible, approaches to address these unique considerations for pediatric exercise research are provided. Thus, this perspective may be a valuable resource for those considering, or those already engaged in pediatric exercise science.
