Assessing comprehension of informed consent in abortion research

Objective/Study Design:
To better understand the extent to which research participants grasp the information conveyed during informed consent, we assessed comprehension of five informed consent principles in people seeking abortion approached to participate in a research study (N = 1557), overall and by age.
Results:
Comprehension was high on right to receive healthcare, confidentiality, and voluntary participation (99.2%, 98.5%, and 99.8%, respectively). Comprehension was lower, but still higher than prior studies, on HIPAA (88.7%) and right to privacy (87.1%). No statistically significant differences in comprehension by age (adolescent vs adult) were found.
Conclusions:
These results suggest that patient-facing materials are adequate in conveying informed consent principles.
