Disorders of the Male Reproductive System01:20

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

575
Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra....

Male Sexual Response: Erection & Ejaculation

4.8K
Sexual stimulation can take various forms, such as physical touch and visual or auditory cues. When this happens, the parasympathetic reflex in the sacral portion of the spinal cord is activated. This reflex stimulates the release of nitric oxide (NO), which then dilates the arterioles in the penis, increasing blood flow to the erectile tissues - the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum.
The blood filling the erectile tissues compresses the veins, which helps to prevent blood from leaving...

Fractures: Bone Repair

3.7K
Treatment for a fracture is based on the type of break, the bone affected, and the patient's age.
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the...

Acute Kidney Injury III: Clinical Manifestations

91
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) progresses through distinct clinical phases: the oliguric, diuretic, and recovery phases, each marked by unique manifestations and challenges.Oliguric Phase:The oliguric phase is the initial stage of AKI, typically lasting 10 to 14 days. This phase is marked by a significant reduction in urine output, usually less than 400 mL per day, indicating decreased kidney function. Fluid retention is a prominent feature, leading to symptoms such as edema, hypertension, and...

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Andrology
  • Trauma Surgery

Background:

  • Penile fracture, though rare, can lead to significant long-term complications.
  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a challenging consequence for patients following penile fracture.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between delayed hospital presentation and the incidence of ED in penile fracture patients.
  • To determine if the time to treatment impacts erectile function outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional, retrospective study was conducted.
  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) severity was assessed using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) score.
  • Data from 46 penile fracture patients at Dicle University Hospital were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • The mean time from event to operation was 9 hours.
  • Patients presenting more than 12.5 hours post-injury had a higher risk of ED.
  • Mean preoperative IIEF was 25, decreasing to 21.3 postoperatively.

Conclusions:

  • Penile fracture necessitates prompt urological intervention.
  • Late presentation (over 12.5 hours) significantly elevates the risk of developing or worsening ED.
