Teeth

676
The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin...

Area of Science:

  • Dental prosthetics and oral rehabilitation.

Background:

  • Edentulous mandibles present significant challenges for oral function and quality of life.
  • Removable and fixed prostheses are common interventions, but their comparative effectiveness and equity implications require thorough evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review the benefits and harms of removable versus fixed prostheses for individuals with completely edentulous mandibles.
  • To investigate potential equity issues, specifically how age and socioeconomic status influence the outcomes of these prosthetic interventions.

Main Methods:

  • This protocol outlines a Cochrane Review, adhering to rigorous systematic review methodologies.
  • The review will synthesize evidence from relevant randomized controlled trials and observational studies.

Main Results:

  • Evidence synthesis is pending the completion of the systematic review.
  • Anticipated results will detail comparative benefits and harms, and explore disparities in outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • The findings will inform clinical decision-making regarding prosthetic options for edentulous mandibles.
  • Understanding equity impacts is crucial for ensuring equitable access to effective oral rehabilitation solutions.
