The emerging role of miR-22 in inflammation

MicroRNA-22 (miR-22), discovered in 2007, is a small non-coding RNA comprising 22 nucleotides. It is widely expressed in organisms and conserved across different species. A series of studies have shown that miR-22 not only regulates the growth and differentiation of various cells and tissues but also participates in the occurrence and development of many diseases. However, most reports on miR-22 have focused on pathological conditions such as tumors and endocrine system disorders. Research on its role in inflammation-related diseases is still nascent. This article summarizes the different functions and related molecular mechanisms of miR-22 in various inflammatory diseases and demonstrates that it exerts diverse regulatory effects in inflammation related to multiple organs and systems. Furthermore, the current research issues and proposed suggestions for future research directions in this field are discussed.
