Abstract:
Automotive interior materials are increasingly designed to be environmentally friendly, aesthetically pleasing, durable, and lightweight. Herein, we report on the production of nanostructured dyed wooden materials to meet these requirements for automotive interior materials. A natural veneer is created through dyeing processes at a mild temperature of 45 °C to produce various color materials with a maximum dyeing ratio of 83% and 5-fold liquid permeability due to the partial removal of lignin and hemicelluloses. This process improves the accessibility and homogeneous distribution of dye particles that are covalently bonded within the cell walls, ensuring uniform color and fastness, thereby resulting in color stability under harsh conditions. The dyed wood material possesses favorable dimensional stability, abrasion resistance, and high adhesion strength, which are important characteristics of decorative materials in high-end automotive interiors. We anticipate that this material will become an optimal material, combining aesthetic appeal, functionality, and environmental friendliness for the interior decoration of diverse public and private vehicles.
